This year’s Smart Process Manufacturing Congress will take place on September 24 and 25, 2024 at the Vogel Convention Center Würzburg. It is the leading congress for digitalization in the process industry and is aimed at users and engineering experts from the sector.

On 25 September at 12.15 pm, we will once again be talking together with Dr. Michael Nussbaumer, Managing Director of Pruess GmbH, about the topic Methods for the integrated engineering of PEAs – from P&ID to automation and integration into the process orchestration layer

The idea of modular plant engineering is to assemble ready-to-use modules for process plants according to the “plug and play” principle. For this purpose, the Module Type Package (MTP) of the module (Process Equipment Assembly, PEA) is read into the higher-level control system (Process Orchestration Layer POL) and only needs to be configured.

This concept is intended to significantly reduce the time from planning and approval to commissioning. This results in convertible, flexible, sustainable, modular systems. This allows the operator to react more quickly to changing market requirements by making simple configuration changes in the POL. The big challenge is that engineers have to think modularly right from the PEA engineering stage. Process engineers and programmers must work more closely together.

The workflow for planning PEAs is still uncharted territory. Compared to conventional planning, several software tools must interlock during the various planning phases. The success of the modular plant concept requires a consistent toolchain that supports the entire engineering process from P&ID to MTP and the integration of the MTP into the POL.

This entire engineering process and a tried-and-tested toolchain will be presented in the lecture.
