Methods for the integrated engineering of PEAs – from P&ID to automation to integration in the Process Orchestration Layer (POL)

The idea of modular plant engineering is to assemble ready-made modules for process plants according to the “plug and play” principle. To do this, the Module Type Package (MTP) of the module (Process Equipment Assembly, PEA) is read into the higher-level control system (Process Orchestration Layer POL) and then only needs to be configured. This concept is designed to significantly reduce the time from planning and approval to commissioning. This results in versatile, flexible, sustainable, modular plants. It also allows the operator to react more quickly to changing market requirements by making simple configuration changes in the POL. The big challenge is that engineers must think modularly as early as the PEA engineering. Process engineers and programmers must work more closely together.

Compared to conventional planning, several software tools must be interlinked during the different planning phases. For the modular plant concept to be successful, a consistent toolchain is required that supports the entire engineering process from P&ID to MTP and the integration of the MTP into the POL.
